1977 年的巴西城市勒西菲，迎來一年一度的嘉年華盛會。不料當地民眾在捕獲的大白鯊嘴裡，竟驚現一條人腿。隨著媒體大肆渲染報導，戲院同步重映《大白鯊》更讓全民陷入瘋狂。與此同時，40歲工程教授馬賽羅因得罪權勢，遭人買兇追殺，只好帶著兒子逃回家鄉勒西菲，幸運一路受到地下特務的庇護，並將兒子交給經營戲院的岳父照護。眼看殺手步步逼近，馬賽羅只得改名換姓，以求一線生機、能與兒子重逢…。
